Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that they achieved significant success with energy-saving driving methods in railway transportation. It was stated that as a result of the work carried out, 270 thousand liters of fuel were saved and 748 tons of carbon emissions were prevented. Minister Uraloğlu emphasized that they aim to save 12 million liters of fuel and 52 million kilowatt hours of electricity every year by expanding this application.
The Role of Railways in Sustainable Transportation
Minister Uraloğlu drew attention to the critical role of railway transportation in sustainable transportation policies and stated that railways are an indispensable element in achieving Türkiye’s carbon emission reduction targets. “With our 2053 Transportation and Logistics Master Plan, we are working to bring an effective and environmentally friendly transportation system to our country. We prioritize green and sustainable transportation by integrating all modes of transportation into our integrated designed transportation ecosystem.”
Studies on Renewable Energy Resources
Minister Uraloğlu said that while expanding the high-speed train and high-speed train network, they aim to increase the share of railway transportation by modernizing existing lines. Stating that they are working to meet 35 percent of the energy needs of railway transportation from renewable resources, Uraloğlu emphasized that they aim to make both economic and ecological contributions by reducing energy consumption in trains.
Successful Pilot Project in Izmir
Minister Uraloğlu, who stated that the necessary measures were taken in terms of energy efficiency by reviewing the current system, announced that the pilot project implemented in the TCDD Transportation Izmir Regional Directorate was successful. He explained that within the scope of the project, driving methods that provide energy savings and were determined with scientific methods were implemented with 54 trains operating in the region. In the tests conducted in the field, it was determined that these methods provided 10 percent energy savings.
270 Thousand Liters Fuel Savings and Carbon Emission Reduction
Minister Uraloğlu, who stated that they started implementing the project in 2024 after the training given to the machinists, announced that they saved 270 thousand liters of fuel and achieved an economic contribution of 12 million liras thanks to the pilot application in TCDD Transportation Izmir Regional Directorate. He also stated that they prevented 748 tons of carbon emissions harmful to the environment.
Target: Saving 12 Million Liters of Fuel and 52 Million Kilowatt-hours of Electricity
Minister Uraloğlu announced that with the implementation of the project in different line sections, they aim to save 2023 million liters of fuel and 10 million kilowatt-hours of electricity every year in line with the 12 consumption values and 52 percent saving target. Stating that this saving will provide an economic contribution of 780 million liras at current prices, Uraloğlu also stated that they will make a great contribution to the environment by preventing 59 thousand tons of carbon emissions.
Green Transformation Continues in Railways
Minister Uraloğlu stated that energy efficiency and environmentally friendly practices in railway transportation will continue to increase and that their ultimate goal is to implement this practice in all trains. He emphasized that in this way, they will contribute to the country's economy and prevent environmental pollution.
