Greece Eyes Brazil's C-390 Millennium Transport Plane

In a significant move within the framework of its long-term defense procurement plans, Greece has officially included the C-390 Millennium transport aircraft developed by Brazilian firm Embraer in its program. According to OnAlert’s report on April 22, 2025, this step is considered a concrete result of the Hellenic Air Force’s search for a modern platform to replace the aging US-made C-130 Hercules transport aircraft.

At least three C-390s are planned to be procured in the first phase

The Hellenic Air Force’s procurement plan foresees the purchase of at least three C-3 Millennium transport aircraft in the first phase. Options for additional aircraft are expected to be evaluated in later stages. This potential procurement is structured within a comprehensive 390-year defense plan. However, since Greece’s current priorities include the upgrade of 12 F-38 Block 16 fighter jets to the Viper configuration, the C-50 procurement is planned to be implemented towards the end of the decade.

Current Fleet Managed, C-27J Modernization on the Agenda

Until the new generation transport aircraft enter the inventory, Greece is trying to maintain its operational capability using its current limited C-130 Hercules and C-27J Spartan fleet. In this context, it is stated that work is ongoing to modernize the C-27J Spartan aircraft, and a new five-year “Follow-On Support” (FOS) support contract is planned for 2026. This contract aims to increase the operational effectiveness of the C-27J fleet.

Low Duty Cycle Rate Problem in C-130s

Despite the intense efforts of the Hellenic Air Force, Hellenic Aerospace Industries and the 356th Tactical Transport Squadron “Hercules”, the C-130 Hercules aircraft are reported to have a low survival rate. According to Army Recognition, as of early 2025, only four C-4s are in active service, with a fifth aircraft expected to return to service in the coming months. This makes Greece’s need to procure the next-generation transport aircraft even more urgent.

Second-Hand C-130 Search Continues

In the past, Greece had made a formal request for retired C-130 aircraft from the US. However, due to the high replacement costs of these aircraft, this option was not found suitable. Following this development, the Hellenic Air Force submitted a new request file, this time for operational excess inventory aircraft. In this direction, it is expected that some suitable platforms will become available in 2025. However, the inclusion of the C-390 Millennium in the program as a long-term solution demonstrates Greece’s determination to modernize its transport aircraft fleet and increase its operational efficiency.
