French Army Strengthens Tactical Drone Capabilities

The French military is taking concrete steps to improve its tactical drone capabilities, drawing on important lessons learned from Ukraine’s extensive use of First Person View (FPV) drones in the field against Russian forces. In this context, in April, the 11th Parachute Brigade conducted an intensive training program at the Tactical Drone Training Center (CETD) in Caylus, France.

According to the statement made by the brigade, this new initiative represents a strategic transition for French paratroopers to specialize in light, fast and maneuverable FPV drones that can effectively carry out reconnaissance missions and support precision strike operations. The statement emphasizes the importance of the army’s adaptation to technological developments, stating that “in an environment where war is constantly evolving, technology has become a weapon in its own right.”

Ukraine Tactics Modeled

According to the Defense Blog, the main purpose of the training program is to equip paratroopers with the skills to effectively use FPV drones in complex operational scenarios, using the tactics observed in the Ukrainian army’s defense against Russian aggression as a model. This aims to enable French soldiers to conduct agile and effective drone operations that are suitable for the dynamics of the modern battlefield.

Emphasis on Critical Skills and Coordination

During the training, trainees were meticulously assessed on a range of critical skills, including infiltration of enemy lines, covert positioning, accurate target acquisition and engagement of enemy positions. During the exercises, the vital importance of coordination between FPV drone operators and other drone pilots was emphasized, and simulations were carried out of the use of different types of unmanned aerial vehicles together and in harmony in modern battlefields.

Integration of Offensive Drone Tactics

In a key phase of the training, the unit reinforced the integration of offensive drone tactics, particularly in scenarios involving bombing fortified enemy positions. “This phase of the training tested the trainees’ ability to coordinate drone attacks while maintaining precision and vigilance in hostile environments,” the statement said. This emphasis shows how much the French army attaches importance to the use of drones not only for reconnaissance but also for attack purposes.

Global Trend Alignment and Doctrine Reassessment

The French army’s focus on FPV drones is seen as a strategic response to the rapid proliferation of unmanned systems in conflict zones by global armed forces. Ukraine’s effective use of FPV drones against Russian armor and fortifications has drawn international attention and prompted European and NATO militaries to reconsider their unmanned systems doctrines, particularly regarding unmanned aerial vehicles. France’s move stands out as part of a process of adaptation to similar tactics and technologies among allied militaries.
