Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has announced some good news for fans attending the 2025 season matches of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the pride of the city that competes in the Indian Premier League (IPL). CMRL aims to promote eco-friendly transportation and reduce traffic congestion during match hours by offering free metro rides to fans on match days.
How to Ride the Metro for Free?
This special app is very easy to use. All fans with a valid match ticket will be able to enjoy free round trip travel between Government Estate Metro Station, the nearest metro station to MA Chidambaram Stadium, and any other metro station in Chennai. All you have to do is scan the QR code on your match ticket at the Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates at the metro stations. This simple process will allow you to enter and exit the metro without any hassle.
Metro Services Extended After Match
Chennai Metro Rail Limited has also extended the metro timings in view of the heavy post-match passenger traffic. To accommodate the post-match passenger flow, the last train from Government Estate Station has been scheduled to depart at 1:00 AM or 90 minutes after the final whistle, whichever is earlier. These extended services will operate towards Wimco Nagar Depot and Airport Metro stations, which are important transport hubs in the city.
Sustainable Transportation with CMRL and CSK Collaboration
This meaningful collaboration between CMRL and Chennai Super Kings aims to provide fans with a convenient, affordable and environmentally friendly travel alternative during the IPL 2025 season. By encouraging the use of public transport, this partnership aims to minimise the environmental impact of major sporting events and promote sustainable transport habits across Chennai.

Urban transport experts have also welcomed the initiative, noting its potential to set a new standard for integrating public transport into major events. “Providing event attendees with easy access to public transport not only improves the fan experience, but also significantly helps reduce traffic congestion and lower vehicle emissions,” said one senior urban mobility analyst.
Aligned with Chennai's Sustainability Goals
This exemplary initiative is also in line with Chennai’s broader sustainability goals of achieving a net zero carbon footprint and ensuring equal transportation opportunities for all residents. By offering free metro rides to fans, CMRL is not only supporting environmental sustainability, but also demonstrating social responsibility by ensuring that fans from all walks of life in the city can travel to and from the stadium safely and efficiently.
This effort highlights the importance of public transport authorities and sports clubs working together for a greener and more livable future. Reflecting Chennai’s commitment to becoming a more sustainable and inclusive urban space, this collaboration sets an inspiring example for other cities looking to implement sustainable transport solutions for major events through integrated planning between public transport authorities and sports clubs.
