One of the UK’s most historic railway stations, Keighley Station, has reopened its doors following a massive £10 million refurbishment project. The 130-year-old station has been modernised and functional for passengers, whilst meticulously preserving its historic charm. Built in 1885, Keighley Station had become deteriorated over time and was in urgent need of repairs to several key areas of the structure.
Modern Improvements Preserving the Historical Texture
As part of the renovation work, the station’s forecourt, facade, waiting rooms and pedestrian bridges were meticulously restored. Teams replaced old wooden materials with new ones and reinforced the roofs and platform ramps. In addition, the triangular wall of the station’s café was fixed to ensure long-term safety. The chimneys, which had been damaged over time, were rebuilt brick by brick in accordance with the original. Drainage and wall repairs were also completed, while the connecting bridge on the western facade was reopened after the structural supports were strengthened.
Railway Legacy Carries On to the Future
Despite the extensive work, Keighley Station continued to serve passengers throughout the project. Passengers were able to observe the progress of the refurbishment, but the complete transformation of the station became clear once the scaffolding was removed. Jonny Ham, from Network Rail, said the team had worked with pride, balancing modern functionality with heritage preservation. Ham emphasised that visitors can now enjoy both improved access and carefully preserved architectural detail. Matthew Stroh, from Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, described the project as a true example of collaboration. Stroh emphasised their shared commitment to providing modern convenience whilst respecting the station’s heritage.
A New Meeting Point for Daily Commuters and Rail Enthusiasts
The renovated Keighley Station now continues to welcome daily passengers and is a magnet for rail enthusiasts. The station stands as a proud symbol of preservation and progress. Thanks to the meticulous restoration work, Keighley Station will continue to serve future generations, preserving its historical and architectural value.
