Comprehensive Cleaning of Grids and Flood Traps in Ankara

Ankara Water and Sewerage Administration (ASKİ) General Directorate cleans rainwater grates, flood traps and underpasses throughout the capital at regular intervals, day and night, to prevent possible floods and inundations caused by blockages. • ASKİ teams have checked 1 grates and 440 flood traps in the last year. During the checks, 597 grates and 7 flood traps that were found to be blocked were cleaned.

ASKİ General Directorate works to make the Capital always ready for heavy rains with its human resources and technical equipment by carrying out routine cleaning, maintenance and repair works in 25 districts.

A very comprehensive cleaning operation has been launched to prevent flood scenes that resulted in loss of life and property due to neglected infrastructure in the past from happening again today. ASKİ teams are systematically scanning all of Ankara's rainwater grids, flood traps and underpasses for blockages.

The teams, who continue the cleaning operation 7/24 without interruption within a program, quickly clean the rainwater grates that are determined to be filled with various materials during the inspections and restore the water flow. In addition, grates that are not registered in the Geographic Information System (GIS) are also recorded in the system one by one.

3 NEW GRILLS PLACED

ASKİ teams have checked 1 gratings and 440 flood traps in the last year. 597 gratings and 7 flood traps that were found to have drainage problems due to materials filling them were cleaned. In addition, 445 new gratings and 230 flood traps were manufactured in various regions of Ankara.

CALL FROM GENERAL MANAGER AKÇAY: “DO NOT THROW GARBAGE INTO GRILLS”

Providing information about the ongoing work, ASKİ General Manager Memduh Aslan Akçay stated that wastewater (sewage) lines and rainwater grates become clogged with sand, gravel and leaves falling from trees over time, and emphasized the importance of regular cleaning. Drawing attention to the fact that grates filled with deposited material such as oil become inoperable, Akçay warned all Ankara residents not to throw materials such as oil, wet wipes, baby diapers, textile products and plastic garbage into the grates.

BE CAREFUL WITH GRILLS DURING ASPHALTING!

Warning district municipalities not to cover the grates while paving the streets, Akçay said, “Not creating a difference in elevation on the street stands out as one of the important elements in the efficient operation of the infrastructure.”

“RAINWATER DRAIN INFRASTRUCTURE IS REVIEWED AT LEAST 3 ROUNDS A YEAR”

Akçay provided the following information about the cleaning efforts carried out to prevent floods or inundations that may occur due to blocked grates, either naturally or due to errors:

In order not to repeat the mistakes of previous administrations and to relive the sad events that resulted in loss of life and property, during the term of our Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mr. Mansur Yavaş, we, as ASKİ, are carrying out a very comprehensive rainwater drainage infrastructure cleaning program in Ankara, the apple of Turkey's eye. In addition to the grates, we are also constantly checking the flood traps in our city in terms of blockage and cleanliness. We have a program that we follow to keep every point where floods may occur in Ankara under control. In this way, we review all the grates registered in our system at least 3 times a year, which can be 4 times. In this way, we take precautions against problems that may arise from administrative sources in the infrastructure. Our aim is to take precautions before a flood disaster occurs and to minimize the negative effects of the flood. Our goal is to completely prevent manhole overflows and floods caused by not being cleaned in Ankara.
