The Bucharest Metro has made a major investment decision to modernize the rolling stock on the M4 line. As part of the $230 million project approved by the Romanian Ministry of Transport, 12 new trains will be purchased for the line. With this modernization work, existing old trains will be replaced by new and modern vehicles, while the frequency of trips will be reduced to five-minute intervals, providing passengers with a more comfortable and accessible transportation opportunity.
New Trains Coming for M4 Line
A $12 million contract has been signed for the purchase of 230 new trains, which will be implemented with the approval of the Romanian Ministry of Transport. Deliveries are expected to be completed within 48 months of signing the contract. Authorities state that this investment has become necessary because the current train fleet is no longer sufficient to meet passenger expectations. Frequent breakdowns, old technology and difficulties in obtaining spare parts prevent consistent service quality on the M4 line.
Aging Fleet Renewed
The average age of the Astra IVA trains, which currently make up a large part of the M4 line fleet, is 18 years, despite the normal service life of 39 years. This means that the trains have been in service for more than twice their intended life. Therefore, the aim of purchasing new trains is to rejuvenate the fleet, reduce maintenance costs and increase operational efficiency. The project will be financed by the European Investment Bank.
Frequency of Trips Will Increase, Passengers Will Be Relieved
Nine of the 12 new trains to be purchased will be in active service on the M4 line, while three will be kept as reserves. Thanks to this strategic planning, it will be possible to reduce the intervals between trains to just five minutes. This significant increase in frequency will facilitate passengers' access to the metro and significantly increase travel comfort by reducing waiting times.
Comprehensive Modernization Works in Bucharest Metro
This renovation of the M4 line is a key part of a broader effort to improve Bucharest’s overall metro system. In 2020, the city signed a contract worth over €13 million with Alstom for a total of 30 Metropolis trains, including 100 six-car sets. These and similar modernization efforts aim to significantly improve the passenger experience on the Bucharest metro and minimize operational risks. Upgrading the existing fleet is seen as a critical step in developing and future-proofing Bucharest’s urban transport infrastructure.
