The Queensland government is embarking on a major project to significantly improve the region’s transport infrastructure as it prepares for the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail project has been launched, aiming to increase capacity and improve reliability on the railway line between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. This huge investment aims to create a faster, more comfortable and more accessible transport network for residents and visitors.
Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail Project Comes to Life
The Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail project, one of Queensland’s largest rail projects, has been awarded a contract to the ActivUs Alliance, led by ACCIONA, for the design and planning of the project. This strong alliance includes leading industry firms such as CPB Contractors, UGL, SMEC and WSP, as well as ACCIONA. The alliance will work closely with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads and Queensland Rail to ensure the successful delivery of the project. The main aim of the project is to significantly increase existing transport capacity between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, reducing travel times and maximising service reliability. These improvements are critical for the increased passenger traffic, particularly during the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
A Huge Investment of $3,64 Billion in Railway Development
The Queensland government is investing a total of $3,64 billion to modernise the region’s rail infrastructure. One of the most important aspects of this comprehensive project is the reconstruction of the existing two-track Kuraby-Beenleigh railway section, which will be converted into a four-track section. This expansion will allow for more frequent and regular train services, reducing waiting times for passengers and improving travel comfort. The project aims to not only increase the number of lines, but also improve the accessibility of stations. In line with this, intersection car parks and special parking areas suitable for disabled people will be built, facilitating access to public transport.
Security and Accessibility at the Forefront
The Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail project is not only about increasing capacity, but also safety and accessibility. The project will see the gradual removal of all level crossings on the 20-kilometre rail corridor. This important safety measure aims to prevent accidents at level crossings. Modern signalling systems such as the European Train Control System (ETCS) will also be implemented. ETCS will significantly increase the overall safety of the rail network by controlling train movements more precisely. The project also includes plans to improve the current state of the local road network and cycle and pedestrian paths. These works will increase the accessibility of the railway line and make daily life easier for local residents. Previously, separate contracts were signed with the Martinus Degnan consortium for the construction of the new Loganlea station and the removal of the level crossings at Bielby Hull and Kuraby. These steps show how comprehensive and meticulous the main project is being carried out.
As a result, the Queensland government’s Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail project stands out as a vital modernisation move for the region’s transport infrastructure. Targeted to be completed before the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the project will make significant contributions to the region by making transport between Brisbane and the Gold Coast faster, more reliable and more accessible. This investment is considered a strategic move that will have positive impacts not only during sporting events but also on the region’s economy and quality of life in the long term.
