The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) has launched a comprehensive bridge reinforcement project to minimize the effects of a possible earthquake and increase traffic safety throughout the city. Within the scope of this important project, detailed reinforcement and maintenance work will be carried out on a total of 22 bridges in different parts of Istanbul. Currently, work is actively ongoing on 5 of these bridges.
Implementing Reinforced Concrete Improvements and Seismic Strengthening
This meticulous work initiated by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality aims to increase the structural durability of the bridges and extend their lifespan. As part of the work, reinforced concrete improvements, steel reinforcement additions and seismic reinforcement applications that will make the bridges more resistant in the event of an earthquake are being implemented. In this way, Istanbul's critical transportation axes will remain safer and more functional in the event of a possible earthquake.
22 Bridges to be Reinforced on the European and Anatolian Sides
The works, which will be carried out simultaneously on both the European and Anatolian sides of Istanbul, will cover a total of 22 bridges. While reinforcement works are planned for 9 bridges on the European side, structural durability enhancing works are being carried out in stages on the Esenler Dumlupınar Street Ayvalı Dere Vehicle Overpass Bridge, where the works have started.
Similar reinforcement works will be carried out on 13 bridges on the Anatolian Side. As of now, Kartal Adnan Kahveci Boulevard – D-100 Highway Intersection Bridge, Kadıköy Göztepe Poet Archive Bridge, Kartal D-100 Cevizli Junction Bridge and Kadıköy Work has started on 100 important bridges, including the D-4 Göztepe Junction Bridge. New carrier systems are being installed on these bridges, seismic reinforcement operations are being carried out, and improvements are being made to increase pedestrian safety.
Traffic Impact is Minimized
Keeping the impact of these bridge reinforcement works carried out on Istanbul's vital transportation arteries on traffic flow at a minimum level is among the priorities of IMM. For this purpose, the works are planned meticulously and implemented in stages. In this way, possible disruptions in both vehicle and pedestrian traffic are minimized. With the completion of the reinforcement works, Istanbul's transportation infrastructure will have a much safer, more durable and longer-lasting structure.
