Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality continues its efforts to raise awareness among city residents about earthquake safety, considering that Türkiye is located in an earthquake zone. In line with this important mission, “Drop-Cover-Hold” drills were organized in Mother City Centers and Lokomotif Children’s Village, especially targeting women and children, the most vulnerable segments of society. These practical trainings aim to teach correct behaviors during disasters.
Earthquake Awareness Trainings Attract Great Interest
Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality continues its education and drill programs to raise public awareness of earthquake risk without slowing down. Mother City Centers and Locomotive Children's Village, operating under the Women and Family Services Department, have become important centers of these awareness-raising activities. The "Drop-Cover-Hold" drills organized in these centers are met with great interest by women and children.
Applied Earthquake Training for Little Hearts
The earthquake trainings held at the Lokomotif Children's Village were specially designed for young students between the ages of 3-6. In the trainings given with interactive methods, how to behave in the event of an earthquake was explained and the "Drop-Cover-Hold" movement was experienced in practice. In addition, important information such as transportation routes to safe areas after an earthquake, the school's evacuation plan and methods for staying calm in times of crisis were conveyed in a language appropriate to the children's level. In this way, the little ones are prepared to take conscious and correct steps in the event of a possible disaster.
Disaster Awareness is Raised among Women in Mother City Centers
In the trainings held at Mother City Centers, women were provided with comprehensive information on the preparatory measures to be taken before an earthquake, the correct behaviors to be followed during an earthquake, and the issues to be considered after an earthquake. Participants were given detailed information on how to ensure their own safety and the safety of their family members during a disaster, who to contact in an emergency, and basic first aid information. These trainings contribute to women being more aware and prepared for disasters.
Earthquake Kit Prepared with Special Children
The event held at Manolya Anne City Center for children with special needs was of great importance in terms of creating awareness. Following the earthquake information training, children prepared an earthquake bag with their teachers and volunteers. Vital needs such as water, long-life food, whistles, flashlights, spare clothes, blankets and basic first aid supplies were carefully placed in the bag. Thanks to this practical event, special children learned concretely how to be prepared in disaster situations and gained significant awareness. Such events once again reveal that all segments of society should be made aware of disasters.
