Activated Carbon Production Facility from Hazelnut Shells to be Established in Ordu

Ordu Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Dr. Mehmet Hilmi Güler is breaking new ground in the world by implementing a groundbreaking project. Mayor Güler announced that the installation of a facility that will produce active carbon from hazelnut shells has begun. Thanks to this innovative facility, hazelnut shells, which have only been used as fuel until now, will be transformed into a high value-added product, making a significant contribution to the country's economy.

Waste is Valorized, Economy Gains

As a result of Mayor Güler’s visionary approach and intensive initiatives, the Active Carbon Facility, which was implemented in Ordu, will provide a sustainable production and earning model that will both provide a serious acceleration to the regional economy and set an example for industrialists. Mayor Güler, who examined the installation works at the facility built in Efirli Neighborhood of Perşembe district, received detailed information about the process from Metropolitan Municipality officials and Chinese experts.

“We Will Transform Hazelnut Shells into a High Value Added Product”

After his examinations, President Güler made important statements and emphasized that the project was a historical opportunity for both Turkey and Ordu. President Güler said, “We have started the installation work at the Ordu Active Carbon Facility, where we will produce active carbon from hazelnut shells, a first in the world. With this facility, we will transform hazelnut shells, which have been used only as fuel until now, into a high value-added product. Thanks to the Active Carbon Facility we established in Ordu, we will produce a world-class product from hazelnut capsules, which are now considered waste, and hazelnut shells, which are considered alternative fuels. This project is a great economic opportunity for both our province and our country, an environmentally friendly transformation and a historical step for domestic production. With this visionary investment that will make a great contribution to the future of Ordu, we will make a serious contribution to our economy and offer an exemplary production and earning model to our industrialists. The machines we have been waiting for a long time for the Active Carbon Facility we established in Efirli Neighborhood of Perşembe district have finally arrived in Ordu. 21 truckloads of machines have taken their places in the facility building and the installation work has started rapidly.”

End of Imports, Domestic Production is Getting Stronger

President Güler stated that with this facility, previously imported activated carbon will now be produced with domestic raw materials, and said, “With this facility, we will now produce previously imported activated carbon on our own lands, with our own raw materials. In this way, we will both support domestic production and make a significant contribution to our country’s economy with an environmentally friendly and sustainable product. Technical teams coming from abroad are completing the installation process by working hand in hand with our own engineers and employees and working devotedly. Seeing how hazelnut shells turn into a valuable product with technology will be a source of pride for both Ordu, our region and our country. I hope this big step will be beneficial for Ordu, our country and our future.”

Wide Range of Use from Medicine to Defense Industry

Drawing attention to the fact that activated carbon is used in critical areas such as medicine, medicine and defense industry, Mayor Güler emphasized that the project will provide foreign exchange inflow and prevent foreign exchange loss. Mayor Güler said, “As Ordu Metropolitan Municipality, we will establish an activated carbon factory from hazelnut shells for the first time in the world with this study. Previously, these products were imported. All institutions and organizations in Türkiye were importing. Apart from that, they are used in the pharmaceutical sector, medicine and defense industry. In addition to these products, we will also establish an R&D center. Thus, we will produce a product imported to our country as an import substitute. We will both provide foreign exchange inflow and prevent foreign exchange loss.” This project is considered an important indicator that Ordu will undertake a pioneering role not only in hazelnut production but also in the field of innovative and value-added products.
