Evaluation from Prof. Dr. Sözbilir: “Stress Release Caused”

Dokuz Eylül University (DEÜ) Earthquake Research and Application Center Director Prof. Dr. Hasan Sözbilir evaluated the earthquake centered in Simav. Stating that the earthquake occurred between Karakoca and Madenköy, Prof. Dr. Sözbilir noted that the earthquake had a dominant dip-slip normal fault characteristic according to the focal mechanism solution.

Prof. Dr. Sözbilir stated that this earthquake may have occurred as a result of the release of stress accumulated in the areas north of Naşa following earthquakes of up to 2011 magnitude that occurred around Naşa-Simav in 2012-5,7. Reminding that similar earthquake storms had occurred in the region in the past, Sözbilir stated that small-scale aftershocks were likely to continue for a while after the main shock. However, Prof. Dr. Sözbilir stated that the main fault in the region was the Simav Fault, which slopes north, and that he thought these earthquakes could be related to small-scale synthetic faulting in the hanging wall of the Simav Fault, emphasizing that there was no need to panic.
