Comprehensive Cleaning Before the Holidays from İZSU

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality IZSU General Directorate has accelerated the odor and fly prevention works in the infrastructure systems in the city center before the Ramadan Feast. In order to prepare the city for the holiday and the summer season, comprehensive cleaning is being carried out in rainwater lines.

With the increase in air temperatures, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality IZSU General Directorate has accelerated cleaning activities in the streams, galleries and channel lines in the city center. Intensive work is being carried out in the metropolitan districts as well as the city center before the Ramadan Feast.

Cleaning operation in Mavişehir AOSB

Karşıyaka Dredging and stream cleaning work continues in the AOSB Stream in Mavişehir. At the point where the stream connects to the Gulf of Izmir, 21 construction machines, including an amphibious dredging vehicle, 18 trucks and 49 personnel are working. In the work carried out in an area of 50 thousand square meters, wastes that come with rain and cause local odor problems due to increasing air temperatures are being removed, and the stream's resistance to flood risk is being increased. The cleaning work carried out in the AOSB Stream, which passes through residential areas and industrial zones in Çiğli and reaches the Gulf of Izmir, will play an important role in the recovery of the Gulf and will also increase the quality of life of the residents of the region.

88 stream beds are cleaned regularly

Stating that they carry out periodic cleaning work in 88 stream beds located in the city center and reaching the Gulf of Izmir, İZSU General Directorate Streams Branch Directorate Technical Manager Erol Eser said, “We carry out our cleaning work regularly so that creatures living under water can breathe more easily and to prevent odor and flies. Our work is currently ongoing in Büyük Çiğli Stream. Since this is a sunken stream, we are cleaning with a floating-mobile (amphibious) vehicle. Karşıyaka"We started cleaning at the point where Bostanlı Creek and Büyük Çiğli Creek connect to the sea. We will complete our work before the Ramadan Feast. After the feast, cleaning of Bornova and Manda streams will continue. In addition, our work continues uninterruptedly throughout the year in other stream beds that do not flow into the Gulf of İzmir," he said.

Gallery and media lines are being cleaned

The cleaning works of İZSU General Directorate before Ramadan are not limited to streams. Stating that the materials accumulated at the bottom of gallery and channel lines after rainfall are cleaned regularly so that they do not reach the sea, Southern Region Machine Technician Ömer Yapan said, “We have removed 25 thousand cubic meters of sediment material from gallery and channel lines in Konak, Balçova, Narlıdere, Güzelbahçe, Buca, Karabağlar and Gaziemir districts in one year. Our works are currently continuing in front of Hamidiye Mosque in Karantina, Üçkuyular Mehmetçik Boulevard and behind İstinye Park. We aim to prevent the odor problem and possible rainwater floods by cleaning the gallery and channel lines. We are completing our preparations before the holiday and summer season.”

Carpets and car parts also come out

Yapan, who drew attention to the fact that waste materials that are difficult to recycle are encountered during the cleanings, said, “Materials such as wet wipes, napkins, car parts and even carpet and rug pieces come out of the lines. These materials should not be thrown into the sewer and grates. In the summer, these materials left inside the lines emit odors and negatively affect the environment and human health. We work in very shallow points. We work with manpower in points that we cannot reach with construction machines. As İZSU General Directorate, we work with all our heart and soul, cleaning our streams, canals, galleries and channel lines.”
