
Filiz Akın, one of the legendary names of Turkish cinema, has passed away at the age of 82. Considered the four-leaf clover of Yeşilçam and having produced unforgettable films for years, Akın was also etched into memories with her “college girl” image. The passing of the master actress, who received many awards throughout her artistic life and had an important place in Turkish cinema, has devastated the art community and her fans.
The Ministry of Health made a statement on its social media account, saying, “Filiz Akın, one of the rare names of Turkish cinema, has passed away in the hospital where she had been receiving treatment for a while. We wish God’s mercy upon Filiz Akın, who left an unforgettable mark on our cinema history, and offer our condolences to her family, loved ones and the art community.”

1-year-old Filiz Akın, who has been receiving treatment in Bodrum for pneumonia and some other infections since September 82, was transferred to Istanbul on Monday night, January 13, by an ambulance plane belonging to the Ministry of Health upon the direction of the Presidency due to urgent need.
Filiz Akın, real name Suna Akın, is a Turkish film actress, writer and presenter who was born in Ankara on January 2, 1943. Born and raised in Ankara, Akın studied at the Department of Archaeology at Ankara University Faculty of Language, History and Geography. However, she started her film career before completing her education. Filiz Akın, who entered the cinema by winning the competition organized by Artist magazine in 1962, appeared on the big screen for the first time in the film "Akasyalar Açarken" in the same year. Filiz Akın was born in Ankara on January 2, 1943. Her mother was Habibe Leman Şaşırmaz, a seamstress from Ankara, and her father was Bekir Sami Akın, a judge from Afyonkarahisar. Her mother was of Albanian origin on her father's side, and her father was of Circassian origin on her mother's side. Filiz Akın lived in Beypazarı, where her father worked, until she was 3 years old. She started primary school at the age of 5. She completed her primary education at Sarar Primary School in Kızılay, Ankara. Her parents divorced when she was 7 years old.

Filiz Akın continued her education at TED Ankara College Foundation Schools as a boarder and a scholarship student. She received various awards at school for her paintings and compositions. She successfully passed all her classes and was chosen as an ideal student by her teachers. She graduated from university in June 1960. After completing her education, she started working at the Ankara branch of American Export-Isbrandtsen Lines. After working at the company for 2 years, she became the head of the maritime branch. She learned English, French and a little Italian. In the meantime, she studied for a semester at Ankara University Faculty of Language, History and Geography and studied archaeology.
Her most famous films include Umutsuzlar, Ankara Express, Utanç, Dağlar Kızı Reyhan and Yankeci Kız. She won the best actress award at the 1971th International Antalya Film Festival for her role in Ankara Express in 8. She appeared in more than 1962 films from May 1972 to September 105. After appearing in 116 films, Akın ended her film career in 1975.
Along with actresses Türkan Şoray, Hülya Koçyiğit and Fatma Girik, she was considered one of the four influential actresses of her time who left their mark on Turkish cinema. In 1965, her son İlker from her first marriage to Türker İnanoğlu was born. During this period, the family resided in Şişli. In 1974, the couple divorced after 10 years of marriage.
After ending her film career, she acted in commercials for İstanbul Bank and presented the music program Podium Show on TRT in 1977. In 1979, she took part in Haldun Dormen's play Bir Ayrılık. In 1979, she performed as the leading actress in the İzmir International Fair.
She married Bubi Rubinstein in 1982. They divorced in 11 after 1993 years of marriage. In May 1994, she married the head of the National Intelligence Organization, Sönmez Köksal, in Ankara. After their marriage, the couple settled in Ankara. Her husband, Sönmez Köksal, was appointed ambassador to France in February 1998 and they lived in the Turkish embassy in Paris for 4 years. In Paris, she organized a Turkish-Ottoman products exhibition in La Fayette and a Tulip Park and Turkish Painters Exhibition in Bagatelle to promote Türkiye and its culture. In 2002, she learned that she had a type of nose and mouth cancer (nasopharynx). She received treatment at the MD Anderson Cancer Center affiliated with the University of Texas and her cancer was cured.
Between 2004 and 2007, she worked as a columnist in Sabah newspaper. In 2005, she launched a campaign for the benefit of the Turkish Breast Foundation and to support the "yellow wristbands against cancer" campaign, and more than 1 million wristbands were sold. In 2005, she supported the promotion of the "blue wristband" campaign organized for the benefit of the Hacettepe University Hope House project, which was organized to increase cancer awareness in society.
In 2006, the street where she lived until the age of 3 in Beypazarı was named "Filiz Akın Street" by the municipal council.
