Deutsche Bahn is postponing the launch of its ICE L trains to mid-2026. The company had originally planned to start the project at the end of 2023, but this target was not met due to supply chain issues and technical hurdles. This delay is particularly disappointing for passengers on the Berlin-Amsterdam line.
Delays and Resolution Process
Between 2019 and 2023, Deutsche Bahn ordered 79 ICE L trains from Spanish company Talgo. However, the Covid-19 pandemic has affected Talgo’s supply chain and has led to delays in the production of the trains. In addition, there have been certification issues regarding the axle load of the locomotives of the ICE L trains. Engineers are working diligently to resolve these technical hurdles.
Innovative Design and Future of ICE L Trains
Talgo’s ICE L trains promise high comfort and efficiency using the Talgo 230 platform. They are designed to transform travel between Germany and the Netherlands. Initial tests have been successfully carried out in Germany and trials will shift to the Netherlands for certification in 2025.
Temporary Solutions for Fast and Comfortable Travel
Due to the delays, Deutsche Bahn will now start using ICE 3neo trains as a temporary solution. These high-speed trains will enter service in December and will offer passengers faster travel.
Future Goals and Sustainable Transportation
Deutsche Bahn aims to significantly speed up the German-Dutch connection with the introduction of ICE L trains. These are expected to be in operation in mid-2026. This will not only increase speed and comfort, but will also be an important step towards sustainable rail travel in Europe.
Expectations for Passengers and Operators
Despite the delays, excitement continues to grow for the final launch of the ICE L trains. Passengers can expect a faster and more comfortable travel experience from 2026. This development also highlights Deutsche Bahn’s efforts to modernise rail infrastructure across Europe.
