South Wales Metro to be Modernised

Transport for Wales (TfW) is starting a major upgrade project on the Rhymney line in 2025 to modernise rail travel and significantly improve the South Wales Metro. The intensive eight-month engineering works will begin in late March 2025, during which more than 15km of track will be electrified, aiming to deliver more efficient and sustainable transport.

New Trains and Electrification

In 2023, TfW introduced new Class 231 trains on the Rhymney Valley route, part of a $987 million investment across Wales. Now, TfW plans to deploy electric Class 756 trains on the railways, promising faster, greener and more accessible journeys for residents in the region.

Project Process and Impacts

During the eight-month project, TfW will be closing the railway for safety reasons. During this time, replacement bus services will be provided for two six-week periods. The railway will be closed from 12 April to 23 May and from 19 July to 31 August. Passengers are advised to check their travel plans in advance to avoid any delays.

Electrification and Station Renovations

Another important phase included in the project is the installation of Overhead Line Equipment for the sustainable operation of the railways. In addition, local stations in the area will be renovated to provide better accessibility and comfort. TfW is committed to minimizing temporary disruptions during construction.

Sustainability and Community Connection

This project will see the Rhymney line electrified, improving transport connections for South Wales communities while also helping to reduce emissions. TfW says these improvements will reshape public transport in the region and position it as a leader in green transport.

Future Expectations

With the introduction of electric trains expected to reduce commute times and increase efficiency, this project provides a brighter transport future for South Wales travellers and revolutionises rail travel in the region.

TfW predicts that once the works progress, South Wales Metro will set new transport standards and create a greener travel network, enabling the spread of environmentally friendly transport and delivering a more efficient transport network for local people.
