The MTA has accelerated the transition from MetroCard to OMNY, ending sales of the card on December 31, 2025. The change is saving $20 million annually and is gaining 65% of riders’ satisfaction. OMNY cards were introduced in 2019 and offer digital payment options such as smartphones and contactless cards.
From MetroCard to OMNY: Nostalgia and Innovation Meet
In New York, MetroCards were once easily swiped at stations, but tourists had difficulty using them at subway turnstiles. But by retiring these yellow cards, the MTA is taking a significant step that mirrors the introduction of subway tokens years ago. Many retailers, including drugstores, will begin the transition by stopping selling MetroCards in the fall.
Drivers can now use their OMNY cards or devices at turnstiles to pass through, effectively eliminating cards altogether. MTA Chairman Janno Lieber describes this innovation as “the future of fares,” emphasizing that this transition reduces costs and offers savings opportunities for passengers.
OMNY Cards and New Discounts
OMNY cards sell for $1 and help those without bank accounts. The MTA is also offering new discounts to help riders get more benefits. In the fall, OMNY vending machines will be installed at 472 subway stations for fast access, allowing riders to load money online or at retail locations.
Farewell to MetroCard: Nostalgic Memories
Some New Yorkers look back nostalgically at the loss of MetroCards. Tara Johnson, 43, keeps a framed MetroCard from her youth. Similarly, Stacie Gorbacheva, 55, proudly wears her MetroCard on a necklace and considers it a symbol of New York pride. Such nostalgic memories will be a thing of the past when the MetroCard is retired.
MetroCard to OMNY: What Will Happen to Riders?
While MetroCards have been discontinued, the MTA will continue to accept them across its transit network. Riders must spend their existing balance, but refunds are available. MetroCard funds are transferable for two years after expiration.
The transition to OMNY heralds a new era for New York City’s transportation system. The innovative payment system increases savings and turns MetroCards into memories.
