Lunatrain Launches Night Train Trips in the US

Lunatrain is launching its journey with the goal of connecting major cities in the United States with affordable overnight train rides. The new service strengthens Amtrak’s existing network and offers a cost-effective alternative to flights and car travel, said company founder Mike Avena. Lunatrain aims to improve urban transportation by offering overnight travel between major cities on the East Coast and the Midwest.

Lunatrain's Service Network

Lunatrain plans to connect cities like Philadelphia, New York City, Charlotte, Atlanta and Chicago using existing rail lines. Avena says Lunatrain offers a unique overnight travel alternative to Amtrak by focusing on major urban centers. Unlike Amtrak, Lunatrain will operate at night, allowing passengers to travel at more affordable prices.

Inspiration from Europe

Avena aims to offer a similar service in the US, inspired by successful night train models in Europe. Interest in night train travel has increased in Europe in recent years, and this has shaped Avena's vision. Lunatrain's service will include comfortable facilities for passengers, such as sleeping areas, Wi-Fi, dining options, lounges and showers.

Operational Challenges and Future Plans

Lunatrain emphasizes the importance of partnering with railroad track owners. With most railroads in the U.S. focusing on freight, Lunatrain must establish agreements with freight railroads and passenger lines to meet its operational requirements. These agreements will provide the necessary permits and regulatory approvals for the trains to use the tracks.

Lunatrain is currently seeking capital funding to develop and test a prototype railcar. It aims to begin transporting passengers within eighteen months after raising $5 million. Avena says that negotiations with rail companies are critical to the successful operation of this new rail line.

Future Perspective

Lunatrain takes a major step toward launching overnight train travel between American cities, a service that is expected to expand transportation options across the country and provide more affordable travel. Avena remains optimistic about overcoming operational hurdles and bringing this convenient and innovative travel option to American travelers.
