Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai is embarking on a major project to equip Bengaluru suburban train with modern, comfortable and efficient coaches. Following recent design proposals, the manufacturing process is about to begin rapidly. The project aims to significantly improve Bengaluru’s public transport network.
Modern Commuter Coaches For Bengaluru
Bengaluru’s suburban rail line is one of the major transportation projects being managed by Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Enterprises (K-RIDE). The new coaches stand out with their stainless steel bodies, 21,7-metre length and speed of 95 km/h. Each trainset has six coaches and can accommodate 1.052 passengers in total. The aim is to provide a more comfortable travel experience for passengers by balancing the seating and standing areas.
In addition, importance was given to comfort elements such as lighting, ventilation and accessibility. These features provide passengers with a modern travel experience while also increasing the efficiency of the railway.
K-RIDE's Plans and Goals
K-RIDE is one of the key stakeholders who has a clear oversight of this project and is shaping future plans. The company plans to procure a total of 2028 train sets by 51. In the first phase, four train sets are expected to be delivered by ICF by 2026. This will enable rapid development of public transport services on various routes in Bengaluru.
Corridor C2 operations in particular aim to significantly ease urban transportation, starting in December 2026. Corridor 4 will start in early 2025 and will strengthen connections across the city. K-RIDE chose to skip the tender process and purchase coaches directly with ICF to move the project forward. This prevented possible delays and quickly achieved the project goals.
Solution to Bengaluru's Traffic Problems
In search of a solution to Bengaluru’s growing traffic woes, K-RIDE initially planned to lease 50 train sets but did not receive sufficient response from the industry. Therefore, to ensure the project progresses, it has switched to direct procurement. This strategic change will enable sustainable financing for rolling stock.
The cost of the project has been set at $516 million, which is planned to be provided equally by both governments. Karnataka and Union governments are providing a total of $306 million for 258 wagons.
Bengaluru’s Public Transport Infrastructure Is Improving
Bengaluru’s suburban railway aims to significantly ease traffic congestion in the city and fill the gaps in public transport. With modern buses and solid financing, this railway line will significantly transform the city’s transport system. With the completion of the system, Bengaluru residents are expected to experience more comfortable and efficient transportation.
With this project, Bengaluru will take a significant step towards strengthening its public transport infrastructure, with its rapidly growing population and developing economy. The relief provided by the suburban line in urban transport also lays the foundation for Bengaluru's future transport vision.
