Hitachi Rail has won a major upgrade contract for the Cascais Line in Lisbon. The company is expanding its partnership with Infraestruturas de Portugal to modernize the telecommunications and passenger systems on this key Lisbon railway line.
Improving Passenger Experience
With this agreement, Hitachi Rail aims to improve the passenger experience by upgrading existing systems on the Cascais Line. The new systems will increase safety and provide real-time train service updates using advanced ETCS Level 2 signaling technology. They will also support multimedia formats, ensuring compatibility with future communication innovations. All stations will be equipped with a fully automated information network.
Innovations in Telematics and Energy Controls
Beyond passenger information systems, Hitachi Rail is also renewing its telematics infrastructure, making improvements to data networks and energy controls. The project, which aims to upgrade SCADA systems in terms of functionality, was launched in the fourth quarter of 2024. These improvements focus on improving safety and increasing efficiency in railway operations.
Transformation of Railway Infrastructure in Portugal
Hitachi Rail has been successfully working to transform the railway infrastructure in Portugal for many years. The company has been providing operational solutions to Infraestruturas de Portugal since the 1990s and currently manages 70% of Portuguese railway traffic through its Lisbon Control Centre. This new project will integrate with other railway lines such as Sines, Évora and Beira Alta, along with the modernization of the Cascais Line.
Global Expertise and New Investments
In June 2024, Hitachi Rail expanded its global reach with the acquisition of Thales’ Ground Transportation Systems unit for €1.66 billion. The investment will allow the firm to further develop its signalling expertise and strengthen international rail corridors. The Paris-Lyon high-speed line is also being upgraded with next-generation digital technologies.
Innovation and Passenger Satisfaction
The Cascais Line contract reflects Hitachi Rail’s commitment to innovation and work that prioritizes passenger satisfaction. The company promises smoother journeys with advanced technologies and local partnerships. These modernization efforts will make Lisbon’s rail network more efficient and earn the trust of operators and passengers alike.
