Climate Change Resilient City Initiative in Samsun

Samsun is taking an important step towards becoming a more resilient city against climate change. Within the scope of the Strengthening Climate Change Adaptation Action in Türkiye Project, a Local Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and Action Plan (YUSEP) was prepared for Samsun.

This plan, covering the 2025-2030 implementation period, was created to ensure that Samsun is better prepared for the effects of climate change and to build a sustainable future. The plan will be implemented in 11 sectors, including urbanization, water resources management, agriculture, fisheries, animal husbandry, biodiversity and ecosystem services, public health, energy, tourism and cultural heritage, industry, transportation and communication, social development and disaster risk reduction.

Samsun's Climate Risks and Precautions

Samsun is a city vulnerable to the effects of climate change due to its location on the Black Sea coast. In recent years, events such as excessive rainfall, flooding and coastal erosion have increasingly affected the region. In addition, heat waves and droughts put pressure on agriculture and water resources.

Within the scope of YUSEP, 100 different adaptation actions were determined in Samsun to minimize these risks and increase the resilience of the city. These actions include:

Adapting urban infrastructure to climate change,

Sustainable management of water resources,

Taking measures to increase resilience against drought and extreme weather events in the agriculture and fisheries sectors,

Protecting natural ecosystems and increasing green areas,

Developing measures for public health,

Increasing energy efficiency and encouraging the use of renewable energy,

There are steps such as strengthening disaster risk reduction efforts.

Climate Plan to be Followed Digitally

The progress of climate adaptation actions to be implemented in Samsun will be monitored through an online system via the Climate Portal. In this way, the effectiveness of implemented policies will be measured and updates will be made when necessary.

These steps will contribute to Samsun becoming a more resilient, sustainable and livable city against climate change.
