Buca Metro Tunnel Excavations Reached 50 Percent Level

The tunnel excavations of the Buca Metro, which the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality continues to build with its own power, have approached 50 percent. Another one of the giant tunnel boring machines (TBM) continuing the excavations saw the light at the Hasanağa Garden Station. The second TBM will reach the same station from the other tunnel in the coming days.

The Buca Metro, which was 2 percent complete when Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay took office, is approaching 50 percent. Important progress is being made in the construction of the line, where four tunnel boring machines (TBMs), each 100 meters long, 7 meters wide and weighing 450 tons, are working simultaneously. The first of the TBMs, which started digging from Buca Koop Station on April 15 and connected Buca Koop Station to Dokuz Eylül University Tınaztepe Station, continued on its way and saw the light at Hasanağa Bahçesi Station. It was reported that the second TBM will reach the station in the coming days in the region where another important threshold was crossed. The other 2 tunnel boring machines continue digging from General Asım Gündüz Station to Şirinyer Station.

What was done?

In the Buca Metro, which consists of a total of 19 meters of tunnels, 500 meters of tunnels have been opened to date. The tunnel works between Buca Koop Station and Dokuz Eylül University Tınaztepe Station have been completed. General Asım Gündüz and Zafertepe, General Asım Gündüz and Üçyol stations have been connected. Pile manufacturing continues at the stations.

15 minutes between Çamlıkule and Izmir Bay

The Buca Metro, which includes Üçyol, Zafertepe, Bozyaka, General Asım Gündüz, Şirinyer, Buca Municipality, Kasaplar Square, Hasanağa Garden, Dokuz Eylül University, Buca Koop and Çamlıkule stations, will be integrated with the existing metro line operating between Fahrettin Altay and Bornova at Üçyol Station and with the İZBAN line at Şirinyer. Train sets will operate on this line without drivers. The travel time between Çamlıkule, the farthest neighborhood of Buca, and İzmir Bay will be reduced to 15 minutes. It is anticipated that the Buca Metro will be completed for 765 million Euros with the purchase of wagons. When the line opens, the daily passenger count is expected to be 400 thousand.
