This week, an expansion project for Amtrak Downeaster’s Wells transportation hub kicked off, significantly improving the area’s transportation infrastructure. The $11,8 million project will upgrade the station by replacing the platform, building a new platform, and connecting the existing platforms with a bridge. The project will take 18 months and will make transportation in the area more efficient.
New Platform and Increased Efficiency
The new platform is designed to allow trains from opposite directions to pick up passengers at the same time, increasing efficiency for daily commuters. The platform is also actively planned to support an additional train route during the morning hours. This innovation aims to reduce regional congestion by targeting passengers traveling between Brunswick and Greater Portland.
Contribution to Regional Economy
Great Falls Construction is leading the project with 80 employees, while approximately 40 suppliers are contributing to the local economy. The materials provided throughout the project will boost the economy in the region.

Wells Select Board Chairman John MacLeod III enthusiastically supports this infrastructure investment and believes it will help elevate Wells as a travel destination. The renovated station has the potential to promote ecotourism and traditional tourism for the town. Wells is known for its open spaces, scenic trails like the Eastern Trail and popular summer attractions. Improved rail service will increase access to tourist areas such as beaches, restaurants and hotels.

Amtrak Downeaster currently operates five daily roundtrips across three states and serves 12 stations. This expansion increases station capacity, allowing it to serve more passengers. The project is part of the larger $31,9 million Wells Area Improvement initiative, which will make regional rail more sustainable.
