Alstom’s industrial site in Barcelona’s Santa Perpètua district has completed the first phase of an ambitious photovoltaic solar project that will generate electricity equivalent to 26,5% of its energy consumption. This phase will see 2.419 solar panels installed on the roofs of workshops, office buildings and car parks. The first panels will be connected to the energy grid, providing the site’s first carbon-free megawatts of in-house production.
Details and Scope of the Project
This innovative project makes a significant contribution to Alstom’s sustainable production goals. The project, developed in collaboration with Edison Next, will see the installation of a total of 3.596 photovoltaic panels. With an installed capacity of 2.041 kWp, these panels will generate 2.776 MWh of clean and renewable energy each year. The second phase of the project involves the installation of solar panels in an additional parking area and is expected to be completed by the end of June.
Environmental Impacts and Carbon Footprint Reduction
Once completed, Alstom’s Santa Perpètua facility will be able to avoid 694 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, equivalent to the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by 162 petrol vehicles in a year. In this way, Alstom will have taken an important step towards environmental sustainability in the railway sector.
The company’s transition to renewable energy sources is not limited to this project. The Santa Perpètua factory, like other Alstom Spain facilities, uses entirely renewable energy. In addition, various practices are being implemented to increase energy efficiency, such as switching to LED lighting systems, the use of more efficient machinery and awareness campaigns for employees.
Green Factory Vision
Alstom’s sustainability goals are not limited to energy production. A forest of 1.000 trees completed on the factory site has been registered with the Ministry of Ecological Transformation, creating a model for balancing CO2 emissions in the railway sector. In this way, Alstom not only reduces carbon emissions, but also contributes to improving the environment.
This project is an important example of how the concept of sustainable production is developing in the railway sector and how renewable energy can be integrated into the industry. Alstom continues to be one of the companies that shape the future by aiming to provide both environmental and economic benefits with its clean energy investments.
