Germany’s leading railway operator Deutsche Bahn is taking an important step towards promoting environmentally friendly rail transport. In collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute, Deutsche Bahn is establishing a centre in Bremen to modernise hydrogen-powered locomotives. A New Center for Locomotive Modernization in Bremen
The new center, which will be built in the Hemelingen district of Bremen, is being realized through an agreement between Deutsche Bahn and the Bremen authorities. The center, called “Sustainable Railway Technologies,” is scheduled to open this fall. The center will receive government funding of several hundred thousand euros and the Fraunhofer Institute will provide scientific support for hydrogen technologies. The project aims to overcome the high costs of diesel fuel and the difficulties of operating hydrogen trains.
