Flexity trams, manufactured by Alstom, have been actively used to provide comfortable passenger transport in Gothenburg. The first three- or five-section vehicles, which started operating on Line 11 in January, make a major contribution to the city's transportation infrastructure. Drawing attention with their modern design and advanced features, Flexity trams have become an important part of the public transport system in Gothenburg.
Features of Alstom Flexity Trams
Alstom Flexity trams are an extended version of the three-section M2020 models, which have been in service since 33. Each vehicle has a capacity of 319 passengers, offering comfort even on long journeys. The design features six bogies (wheeled substructures) in the front and middle carriages, which increase the stability of the tram, making journeys safer and more comfortable.
With a maximum speed of 70 km/h, Flexity trams are quite suitable for urban transport as a fast means of transport. This speed allows passengers to reach their destinations quickly and comfortably.
Heating System and Energy Efficiency
Another important feature of Alstom Flexity trams is the heating system that saves energy in winter. This system minimises energy consumption by using the heat generated by the tram’s traction equipment. As a result, the trams maintain a comfortable temperature level inside without excessive electricity consumption, thus offering environmentally friendly and energy-efficient transport.
Production and Project Financing
The Alstom Flexity trams are manufactured at the Alstom facility in Bautzen, Germany. According to the option agreements concluded between 2021 and 2022, the purchase of 60 trams cost 120 million euros. The first contract was signed with the transportation company Västtrafik in 2016. In 2021, Alstom acquired Bombardier Transportation, and Vossloh Kiepe and Knorr-Bremse, who were involved in this project, produced the trams' drive systems and electronic components.
Alstom Flexity trams offer an innovative solution to Gothenburg’s transport system. With their modern design, environmentally friendly heating systems and high passenger capacity, these trams provide comfortable, fast and sustainable transportation for the city and its passengers.
