The United Nations (UN) has announced that more than $53 billion is needed to rebuild Gaza and end the humanitarian crisis in the region. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that it is difficult to assess the current situation in Gaza clearly. However, according to preliminary assessments, it has become clear that the reconstruction process will require a large amount of financial resources.
Scope of Reconstruction Work
According to a UN report, infrastructure in Gaza has been largely destroyed. Following the terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas on October 7, 2023, Israeli attacks have reduced much of Gaza to ruins. Schools, hospitals and basic infrastructure need to be rebuilt. The report states that approximately sixty percent of homes have been destroyed and emphasizes that a budget of more than $15 billion is needed to rebuild these homes.
Political Infrastructure and the Need for a Two-State Solution
The UN states that in order to begin rebuilding Gaza, it is necessary to go beyond just infrastructure work. The report states that a viable two-state solution is needed to end Israel’s occupation of Palestine. It emphasizes that this requires the establishment of a political infrastructure in Gaza and the strengthening of law enforcement. These steps will form the basis for long-term peace and stability in the region.
