Izmir Metropolitan Municipality continues its inspections for safe travel in the Konak Tunnel. The tunnel is monitored by cameras 7/24 to quickly intervene in any accidents or emergencies that may occur.

All necessary precautions are being taken for safe and comfortable driving in the 1674-meter-long Konak Tunnel under the supervision of the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality. The Konak Tunnel, which connects Konak and Yeşildere Streets and is visited by over 1 million vehicles per month, is operated by the Izmir Transportation Center Branch Directorate Konak Tunnel Operations Directorate affiliated to the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Transportation Department. With the controls carried out with cameras in the directorate, immediate intervention is made in the event of a possible vehicle fire, accident, malfunction and emergency. The team under the management of the tunnel director consists of electrical and electronics engineers, mechanical engineers, electrical and electronics technicians and technicians, office workers and emergency personnel.

What are the duties of Konak Tunnel Management Chief?

The Tunnel Chief serves 7/24. The team works with the shift system. The control center constantly monitors traffic. Regular maintenance of electrical, electronic and mechanical systems is performed. Possible malfunctions are intervened immediately. In addition, chief responsibilities include interruption of traffic in emergency situations, lane closure and preparation for various emergency scenarios. Control, safety and cleaning of warning signs, fire cabinets, sidewalks, transition between two tubes and emergency buttons are among the duties of the chief.

Stating that the Konak Tunnel is an important artery in the city where 40 thousand vehicles pass daily, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Transportation Department Head Tolga Çilingir said, “There is an energy supply system suitable for today’s technology, a telecontrol system such as lighting, announcements, and vehicle counting. These are also important systems in terms of traffic disruption and vehicle, driver and passenger safety. We also ensure the safe passage of vehicles through the tunnel by frequently maintaining and repairing the system.”

Özgür Yalçınkaya, İzmir Transportation Center Branch Manager affiliated with İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Transportation Department, said, “In case of any fire or emergency, our colleagues in the control room and electromechanical systems immediately detect the incident and immediately go to the scene with vehicles to take the necessary security measures. In case of a problem such as a fire; the fire is detected by the sensor system and intervention is carried out there with dry chemical powder. The fire is also intervened with the fire water system in the system. In case of a traffic problem, our emergency response team goes to the scene and ensures traffic safety. Our traffic teams work in 7 shifts 24/3. We have 4 teams, each team consists of 7 people. We work with a shift system. We have personnel in both the control room and emergency response 7/24.”
