Schools Closed in Gaziantep on the Anniversary of the February 6 Earthquake

The earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş that occurred on February 6, 2023 deeply affected all of Turkey and caused great destruction in many provinces, especially Kahramanmaraş, Gaziantep and Adıyaman. As the second anniversary of this great disaster, called the Disaster of the Century, approaches, commemoration events are being held in the regions affected by the earthquake. In this context, schools were closed for one day in Gaziantep on February 6, 2025.

In an official statement made by the Gaziantep Governorship, it was announced that education in schools throughout the city will be suspended for one day due to the second anniversary of the February 6, 2023 earthquakes. This decision was made in order to ensure that citizens who will attend commemoration programs and visit cemeteries can move freely. It was also stated that personnel working in public institutions will be considered on administrative leave, provided that a minimum number of personnel are present, in order to participate in these events.

Commemoration Events in Earthquake Zones

On the anniversary of the earthquake, commemoration events will be held in various provinces, especially in Kahramanmaraş, Gaziantep and Adıyaman. Prayers will be read for those who lost their lives in the earthquake, cemeteries will be visited and support programs will be held for families affected by the disaster. Information meetings and symposiums will be held, especially to remember the traces left by the disaster and to be better prepared for similar disasters.

Is February 6 a Public Holiday?

February 6 was closed for a certain period of time only in the provinces affected by the earthquake due to commemoration programs. However, this date was not declared an official holiday in Turkey. Therefore, schools and public institutions in provinces outside the earthquake zones will continue their activities as normal.

Students and Families in Earthquake Zones

Various psychosocial support programs have been put in place to ensure continuity of education for children and families affected by the earthquake. Experts emphasize the importance of both individual and social solidarity to reduce the trauma caused by the earthquake. Intensive efforts are being made to return education to normal in Gaziantep and other affected provinces.
