Russian tank manufacturer Uralvagonzavod (UVZ) has unveiled the first T-09M main battle tank equipped with its new active protection system Arena-M T6-A1-90. Unveiled at the 2024 ARMY Expo, Arena-M is the most advanced protection system developed by the Russian Ground Forces to protect tanks against anti-tank missiles and rockets. Arena-M will be integrated into T-90M tanks and will work in conjunction with other protection systems to protect tanks from potential threats.
Features of Arena-M System
Arena-M detects threats in the environment using 360° Doppler radar technology. The radar automatically detects approaching threats and determines the appropriate timing to neutralize the threat by firing explosive munitions. The system places an explosive between the threat and the tank within 7 milliseconds, thus destroying the anti-tank missile or rocket before it can reach the tank's target. Arena-M operates fully automatically after being activated by the tank's commander.
This system is designed to provide effective defense against external threats such as anti-tank missiles and rockets, and directs explosive munitions to the target. However, it is noted that Arena-M is not widely used in Russia's inventory due to its high cost. However, the system's effectiveness in combat has not yet been fully proven.
System Integration and Compatibility with Other Protection Systems
The Arena-M system is also expected to work in conjunction with other existing protection systems for Russian tanks. For example, it can be integrated with the Shtora-1 electro-optical countermeasure system and the Nakidka optical camouflage system to further protect tanks. It can also be used in conjunction with more traditional and cost-effective systems such as anti-aircraft cages and additional reactive armor blocks. Such combinations are becoming essential equipment for tank protection for the Russian Ground Forces.
Goals and Future Plans
The Russian Ground Forces plan to integrate the Arena-M active protection system not only on the T-90M tanks, but also on the T-72B3M and T-80BVM tanks. This modernization process aims to increase the defensive capabilities of the tanks and create a more flexible and equipped army.
The Arena-M is expected to add significant power to Russia’s existing tank force, but more data is needed on its high cost and potential battlefield accuracy. The system’s ability to provide effective protection, particularly against anti-tank missiles, could make a significant contribution to Russia’s military power.
