Morocco to Buy 36 Howitzers from Israel

Morocco is turning to the ATMOS 2000 self-propelled howitzer systems produced by Israel’s Elbit Systems due to technical problems with the Caesar artillery systems produced by France’s KNDS France. According to a report published in the French newspaper La Tribune on February 8, a contract has been signed between the Moroccan Royal Armed Forces (FAR) and Israeli manufacturer Elbit Systems for 36 ATMOS 2000 howitzers. This decision was made due to ongoing technical problems with the French Caesar artillery system, which Morocco ordered in 2020 and partially received in 2022.

Technical Issues and Morocco's Decision

Morocco has experienced serious technical problems with its French Caesar artillery systems. Following the first deliveries in 2022, Moroccan authorities complained to the French manufacturer about repeated problems. However, KNDS France has not responded to these complaints quickly and effectively. As a result, some artillery units are still in a state of distress that is not operational. Morocco had expected a commercial gesture from the French in response to these difficulties, but this expectation was not met. Morocco has therefore decided to procure the Israeli ATMOS 2000 howitzer system as an alternative.

ATMOS 2000 Howitzer

Manufactured by Israeli Elbit Systems, the ATMOS 2000 is a self-propelled artillery system with a 155 mm/52 caliber gun mounted on a truck chassis. The ATMOS 2000 is a highly mobile system, offering much faster deployment and withdrawal compared to towed artillery. The modular structure of the system allows it to be integrated into various 6×6 and 8×8 tactical wheeled vehicles. In addition, the ATMOS 2000 can use ammunition that complies with NATO and STANAG standards.

Advanced Features

ATMOS 2000 can fire 4-6 shots per minute thanks to its fully automatic ammunition loading mechanism and advanced fire control system. With a maximum range of up to 40 kilometers, this howitzer works in integration with Command, Control, Communication, Computer and Intelligence (C4I) systems, providing rapid deployment and withdrawal capabilities for effective operations. In addition, it can be easily transported by air thanks to its lightweight and modular design. Its cabin with increased ballistic protection level ensures the safety of the crew.

Impact on French Defense Industry

This development shows that the French defense industry, and especially French defense solutions, are struggling to compete with advanced, responsive and cost-effective alternatives. At the same time, French manufacturer KNDS France and its subsidiary Arquus may face further difficulties in the production of defense vehicles after this loss. This agreement with Morocco’s Elbit Systems is an important test of the French defense industry’s competitiveness in the international market.
