Istanbul's Iconic Transportation Vehicles Celebrate Historic Anniversary

The Beyoğlu-Karaköy Historical Tunnel, one of the symbols of public transportation in Istanbul, celebrated its 150th anniversary this year, while the Nostalgic Tram on Istiklal Street celebrated its 111th anniversary. A ceremony was held on Istiklal Street on Friday, February 14, for Istanbul's symbolic transportation vehicles.

One of the long-established institutions of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, IETT, is celebrating its 2025th anniversary as of 154. Continuing its new investments and operational activities rapidly, IETT provides approximately 832 million trips by performing 64 thousand trips on 5 different lines every day in Istanbul. In addition, it continues its efforts to meticulously preserve the most important symbolic means of transportation in Istanbul and deliver them to future generations.

BEYOĞLU – KARAKÖY TUNNEL AND PRESERVATION OF THE NOSTALGIC TRAM

Beyoğlu – Karaköy Tunnel is the first metro in Turkey and the second oldest in the world. İETT continues its regular maintenance works by meticulously preserving this historical transportation line.

Similarly, the Nostalgic Tram, which creates a nostalgic atmosphere on Istiklal Street, is also operated with great care. Carrying thousands of passengers every day, these historical transportation vehicles continue to provide uninterrupted service to the people of Istanbul.

ENTHUSIASM CELEBRATION ON İSTİKLAL STREET

A special ceremony was held on Istiklal Street on Friday, February 14, on the occasion of the anniversaries of the Beyoğlu – Karaköy Tunnel and Nostalgic Tram. Istanbulites also showed great interest in the ceremony, which was attended by İETT General Manager İrfan Demet, İETT managers and employees.

As part of the ceremony, a musical concert was presented on the Nostalgic Tram, and sahlep was served to citizens in the Beyoğlu-Karaköy Tunnel.
