Germany Launches Tender for Supply of 400 Electric Trains

Germany has taken a major step towards modernising its railway transport and increasing environmental sustainability. DB Regio, the country’s largest passenger operator, is launching a major project that will shape the future of railways with the tender it has launched for the supply of 400 electric trains. The tender, which could total up to 5 billion euros, aims to accelerate the modernisation process of Germany’s railway network.

New Electric Trains with 160 km/h Speed and 600 Passenger Capacity

The trains to be procured within the scope of the tender will have a maximum speed of 160 km/h and a capacity of 600 passengers. These new trains, which will be developed based on the existing Class 423 and 430 train sets, will be designed to be compatible with the existing rail systems operating in different regions of Germany. The manufacturers will be responsible for ensuring the high technological standards and reliability of the trains. In this way, both passenger comfort will be increased and the efficiency of rail transportation will be ensured.

Three Framework Agreements Planned

Germany plans to conclude framework agreements with three leading railway manufacturers on this large-scale project. These agreements will run from April 2026 to March 2034 and will contribute to the long-term development of the German railway industry. In addition, the manufacturers involved in this project will take care of the technical maintenance of the trains and the supply of spare parts, ensuring the longevity and reliability of the supplied trains.

Environmental Targets and Carbon Emissions

With this tender, Germany will not only modernize its rail transport, but also support its environmental goals. The new electric trains aim to significantly reduce carbon emissions. The widespread use of electric trains will strengthen the country's environmentally friendly transport system and contribute to the establishment of a more sustainable transport infrastructure by reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

Innovative Solutions for Participating Companies

This huge tender requires railway manufacturers who want to participate to present innovative solutions that meet environmental and technical standards. Germany aims not only to benefit from new technologies in its modernization process, but also to take into account its environmental responsibilities. Therefore, companies are expected to present innovative, sustainable and highly efficient solutions.

This large-scale electric train procurement tender launched by Germany will not only modernize rail transport, but will also shape the future of the country’s railway infrastructure. This step, taken in the name of reducing carbon emissions and promoting more environmentally friendly transport options, aims to make Germany’s railway system more sustainable and efficient. This tender will determine the future direction of German railways and become a project that can set an example in Europe.
