France Gives Up Buying Mirage Warplanes From Greece

Greece was planning to sell 24 Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets from its inventory in order to finance the purchase of new Rafale fighter jets from France. However, France’s refusal to buy the aircraft has disrupted Greece’s plans. France has not shown interest in purchasing the Mirage 2000-5s, and Greece has faced difficulties in this regard. According to information reported by Kathimerini, although talks have been held with several potential buyers, particularly India, no serious interest has emerged. Instead, there are reports that Ukraine is interested in the aircraft, but Greece has chosen not to proceed with the deal.

Reasons Why Greece Is Not Agreeing to Sell

Greece is considering selling the Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets, but is reluctant to do so because of their critical role in the country's air defense. Greek officials believe that it would be dangerous to dispose of the Mirage 2000-5s, especially until the supply of Rafale fighter jets is more secure. Therefore, it is understood that Greece is aiming to sell the aircraft to finance the purchase of new Rafales, rather than donate them.

Statements by Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias

Greek Minister of National Defense Nikos Dendias recently discussed the diversity of aircraft in Greece’s current air force in an interview. Dendias stated that the country plans to strengthen its F-16 Viper fleet and sell off older aircraft. Dendias emphasized that the Greek air force has F-4, Mirage 2000-5, F-16 Block 30, F-16 Block 50, F-16 Block 52 and Rafale aircraft in its fleet, and that this diversity reduces efficiency. He also stated that the F-16 Block 30 and Mirage 2000-5 aircraft should be sold. Greece is developing various strategies to strengthen its Rafale fleet, upgrade F-16s to the Viper level and acquire F-35 aircraft in the future.

 Greece's Air Power Modernization

Greece has adopted a long-term strategy to modernize its air force. The sale of old aircraft such as the Mirage 2000-5 and F-16 Block 30 is aimed at creating resources for the expansion of the Rafale fleet and the purchase of new generation F-35 aircraft. This strategy of Greece aims to strengthen its air defense, which plays an important role in the regional security balance. However, the sale of the Mirage 2000-5 aircraft and how relations with France will shape in the future seem to be one of the most critical points of Greece's defense policies.
