Diyarbakir Fire Department to Monitor Chimney Cleaning with Software Program

Diyarbakir Metropolitan Municipality developed a software program to prevent chimney fires and to systematically monitor chimneys.

The Fire Department has developed a software system in collaboration with the Information Technology Department regarding the physical conditions of chimneys, their assembly methods, working principles, contamination stages, main risks in case of fire, cleaning methods, principles of extinguishing possible chimney fires and the duration of cleaning chimneys.

The program will automatically give a warning

Within the scope of the software, all structures with chimneys will be recorded. When the specified period is over, as deemed appropriate by the regulation, the program will give a warning and indicate that it is time to clean the chimney.

Systematic chimney cleaning

The Fire Department decided to clean the chimneys of all buildings in the city. While chimney cleaning activities are carried out by the Chimney Chief, affiliated to the Inspection and Prevention Branch Directorate of the Fire Department, chimney cleaning in businesses and furnaces should be done every 6 months, and in buildings where coal and wood are used, it should be cleaned once a year.

In 2024, an average of 13 chimney fires occurred per month. 7 of these fires occurred because chimneys were not cleaned. Two firefighters were seriously injured in a chimney fire that occurred on April 1, 2024.

Diyarbakır Fire Department, which is trying to minimize roof and chimney fires, which are among the most dangerous fire groups, will continue its efforts to prevent such fires.
