DB Signs €6,3 Billion Contract for Train Control System

German Railways (DB) is accelerating the digital transformation of its railway infrastructure with a major €6,3 billion contract signed with contractors. The contract covers the supply of modern digital train control systems as well as automated platforms. The agreement stands out as an important step towards increasing the efficiency of rail transport in the future.

Contract Structure and Contractors

DB has traditionally adopted a long-term contract format that focuses on supply volumes rather than specific locations. This approach aims to enable projects to be completed more quickly. Contractors are committed to integrating 2028 devices by 15.500, with some projects continuing through 2032.

This contract brings together the most important companies in the sector to accelerate the modernization of the railway infrastructure. The contractors include Alstom, Hitachi Rail GTS Deutschland, MerMec Deutschland, Leonhard Weiss and a consortium of Siemens Mobility. Siemens Mobility was awarded a €44 billion contract, representing 2,8% of the total budget. Alstom is responsible for providing 600 devices to the supply area, with revenues of €1.890 million.

Project Timeline and First Steps

The first projects are scheduled to start in spring 2025. These projects will accelerate the modernization of the railway infrastructure, contributing to the creation of a safer, more efficient and digital railway network. DB expects contractors to develop technological platforms with standard interfaces during this process. The company expects that this modernization initiative will significantly shorten implementation times, which previously took eight years, and enable projects to be completed more quickly.

Conclusion and Future Perspective

This major DB contract represents an important step towards digitalization in the railway sector in Germany. The digital train control systems and automated platforms, which will be the responsibility of the contractors, aim to increase the safety and efficiency of rail transport. The cooperation with Alstom, Siemens Mobility and other contractors will ensure the successful completion of the projects and accelerate the digital transformation process in the sector.
