Cambodia Expands Railway Infrastructure

Cambodia is taking a significant step towards strengthening its transport infrastructure, aiming to modernise its railway network with a new agreement with Royal Railway. The public-private partnership aims to support economic growth by improving logistics efficiency and providing sustainable transport solutions.

The agreement is in line with the country’s vision to develop its transportation infrastructure and aims to increase economic opportunities through investments in the railway sector. Transport Minister Peng Ponea and Royal Railway Chairman Kit Meng signed the agreement on February 13, stating that this cooperation lays the foundation for future strategic partnerships.

Cambodia is strengthening its logistics sector by focusing on expanding its railway system, aiming to make freight transport more efficient across the country. In particular, high cargo capacity and the potential to reduce road congestion support regional trade. Prime Minister Hun Manet encouraged the government’s efforts to expand the railway network.

Royal Railway has purchased new locomotives to improve its railway infrastructure, and these investments contribute to Cambodia’s long-term goals in the transport sector. By 2024, shipments on the Phnom Penh-Poipet and Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville routes increased by 8,29% to 1,16 million tons. However, passenger transport decreased by 2023% compared to 16,98.

This agreement supports Cambodia's efforts to build a more sustainable and efficient railway system and is an important step towards modernising the transport network.
