Azerbaijan is preparing to undergo a major modernization of its railway and metro systems in order to improve passenger services. The country’s President has approved a large-scale program of infrastructure improvements and renovations. The program covers both railway and metro services.
Railway Modernization and New Trains
Azerbaijan is undergoing a major transformation in railway transport. The government plans to purchase 20 new trains and put them into service to improve passenger connections across the country. This project includes the purchase of modern train sets and the holding of tenders.
Currently, the main supplier of trains to Azerbaijan is the Swiss-based company Stadler. Stadler has successfully delivered four diesel and six electric FLIRT trains.
Metro Modernization in Baku
Azerbaijan also attaches great importance to modernizing the metro system in the capital Baku. In recent years, 177 old metro cars have been retired and replaced with more modern models. Currently, 351 Russian-made cars are in use in the Baku metro, but new deliveries are planned.
The new modernisation plan aims to add 299 new carriages to the metro system. It is part of a long-term investment to bring Baku’s metro system up to international standards. In addition, 2018 new trainsets entered service between 2023 and 20, and 13 more modern trainsets are currently being delivered.
Passenger Comfort and Safety Will Increase
Azerbaijan’s modernization plan aims to increase passenger comfort and safety. New trains will replace old vehicles and provide more efficient and safe transportation services. Experts say modern train sets will reduce train intervals and improve passenger service. New lines and routes will balance passenger flows and optimize transportation networks.
Infrastructure Development and Future Vision
As part of these projects, the Azerbaijani government aims to develop transport infrastructure with modern technologies. The purchase of new train sets will increase transport efficiency and increase the comfort of public transport. In addition, a long-term development strategy is being pursued, taking into account population growth and future urban transport demands.
Azerbaijan's railway and metro modernization will not only improve passenger transportation but also bring the country's transport infrastructure into line with international standards.
