CN Unveils Innovative Hybrid Diesel Electric Locomotive

Canadian National (CN) has reached a major milestone in sustainable rail operations, unveiling a hybrid diesel-electric locomotive that paves the way for a greener future. The new technology is a major step forward in reducing environmental impact and enabling more efficient rail transportation.

Revolution with Hybrid Diesel Electric Locomotive

CN’s Q19-2.4GH hybrid diesel-electric locomotive is a joint development project of the company with Knoxville Locomotive Works. Equipped with a 2,4 MWh battery-powered diesel engine, the locomotive delivers impressive performance with 3.200 horsepower. It also supports 100% biofuel preparation, providing an environmentally friendly transportation solution. The technology is based on the use of an ex-BNSF Genset locomotive.

The hybrid locomotive provides immediate environmental benefits by reducing fuel consumption by almost 50%. With this innovative locomotive, CN aims to contribute to global decarbonization targets and align its rail sector operations with a more sustainable future.

Phased Deployment and Testing

The Q19-2.4GH hybrid locomotive will be deployed over the next six months, during which time the locomotive will be deployed at CN’s sites and on branch lines in Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiana, as well as testing in the cold weather conditions of Western Canada. This phased deployment will allow CN to evaluate the hybrid locomotive’s reliable performance in a variety of environments.

The data collected during the tests will enable wider adoption of these technologies and accelerate the rollout of hybrid technologies across CN’s rail network.

Sustainability Roadmap

With this initiative, CN reinforces its leadership in sustainable rail transportation. The company also stands out with its decarbonization projects, such as the Wabtec FLXdrive battery-electric locomotive previously ordered for its Pennsylvania operations. These projects demonstrate CN’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and advancing environmentally friendly transportation.

Competitors' Attempts

CN’s hybrid locomotive projects are part of similar initiatives with other major railroads in the industry. Union Pacific, for example, is testing 20 battery-electric locomotives, while BNSF is focusing on hydrogen fuel cell technologies. Canadian Pacific Kansas City and CSX are also leading the way by using hydrogen fuel cell locomotives in field operations.

 Sustainable Railway Innovation

Canadian National’s hybrid diesel-electric locomotive project is a significant step forward in transforming the rail industry. This initiative will not only increase CN’s efficiency, but also set the benchmark for the future of environmentally friendly rail transportation while continuing its commitment to customers and communities.
