
The “First 5-Year Provincial Action Plans” of the Zero Waste Blue Movement, which is part of the Zero Waste Project implemented by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change under the auspices of Emine Erdoğan, have been completed. In 5 years, 20 thousand tons of marine garbage, enough to fill 500 trucks, were collected from the seas.
The Zero Waste Blue Movement, which was implemented within the scope of combating marine litter, was launched by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change under the auspices of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's wife Emine Erdoğan on June 10, 2019. Within this scope, marine litter is being collected in 28 coastal provinces with the Circular on the Preparation and Implementation of Marine Litter Provincial Action Plans published.
GARBAGE FOUND ON THE SEA SURFACE AND BOTTOM WAS CLEANED
While region-specific measures were taken to prevent marine litter formation at its source with Provincial Action Plans, studies were carried out to clean litter on the coast, sea surface and seabed. In addition, education and awareness-raising activities were disseminated at the national level.
5 TRUCKFULLS OF GARBAGE WERE REMOVED FROM THE SEAS IN 20 YEARS
As a result of the Zero Waste Blue Movement and the “First 5-Year Provincial Action Plans”, 245 thousand tons of garbage were cleaned from the seas. In other words; the seas were saved from 20 truckloads of garbage. This garbage was managed in a way that would not harm the environment with appropriate disposal methods. In 500, 2024 tons of marine garbage were collected from the seas. As of 25, the “Second 480-Year Marine Garbage Provincial Action Plans” entered into force. With these plans, the fight against marine garbage will become even more comprehensive.

Marine litter is waste that harms the marine ecosystem, consisting of substances that do not decompose in nature for a long time, such as plastic bags, bottles, fishing nets, single-use plastics and cigarette butts.
