UK to Modernise Electrostar Train Fleet

The UK is embarking on a major modernisation programme to strengthen its transport infrastructure and improve passenger transport services. The major renewal of the Electrostar train fleet aims to significantly transform train services in the south-east of the country. The programme is characterised by the use of energy-efficient technologies that aim to both reduce environmental impact and improve passenger comfort.

Both Interior and Exterior Designs of Trains Are Being Renewed

The modernisation of the Electrostar trains covers a wide range of areas, from the interior to the exterior. The trains’ interior cabins are being fitted with energy-saving LED lighting, making them more efficient. USB ports and power outlets have also been added so passengers can charge their devices during the journey. These innovations aim to provide a travel experience that is both environmentally friendly and convenient. The exterior design of the trains has been completely revamped with a new paint job, giving them a more aesthetic and eye-catching appearance. These trains operate in Kent, East Sussex and the south-east of London.

Southeastern's Modernization Efforts

Southeastern will begin these innovative changes to its train fleet at its Ashford depot, with the plan continuing at its Grove Park depot during the summer months. Southeastern has adopted this modernization program as a strategy to improve overall service quality by increasing passenger comfort and safety while traveling. The interior improvements promise to provide a better travel experience, both visually and functionally.

High-Speed Trains Are Also Being Modernized

Alongside the Electrostar trains, the UK is also continuing to modernise its high-speed train fleet. Southeastern will upgrade 395 high-speed Javelin trains of the 29 series, making services on the HS1 line connecting London’s St Pancras to Kent faster and more efficient. The upgrades are being undertaken under a £27m contract with Hitachi Rail. The upgrade of high-speed trains is a significant step forward in the UK’s transport infrastructure.

Modernization with International Collaborations

The UK continues to modernise its transport services, not just its local train lines, but also through international partnerships. Alstom will work with Italy’s Trenitalia to upgrade 357 of the 74 series trains that connect London to the eastern suburbs. This contract, due to be signed in May 2024, demonstrates their commitment to systematic improvements. The modernisation programme not only improves service quality but also aims to reduce environmental impact.

 Sustainable and Comfortable Travel

The UK is preparing to meet future transport needs with these investments aimed at developing its transport infrastructure and improving the quality of passenger transport. Energy-efficient technologies and modern interior design will provide an environmentally friendly and comfortable transport experience. Coordinated cooperation between manufacturers, operators and leasing companies is helping the UK achieve its transport sector goals.
