Škoda Chooses ABB Batteries for Sustainable Rail Transport

Škoda has entered into a significant partnership with ABB to strengthen its commitment to environmentally friendly rail transport solutions. This cooperation involves equipping RegioPanter electric trains with ABB’s advanced Pro batteries. A total of 20 Pro 15C-195 batteries will be supplied for 8 trains under the contract worth $850 million.

Features and Benefits of ABB Pro Batteries

ABB’s Pro batteries offer durability and modularity thanks to lithium titanate oxide technology. Their adjustable voltage range from 350 to 1050 volts makes them suitable for the diverse needs of rail transport.

Main Features:

  • Fast Charging: Minimizes operational disruptions of trains.
  • Performance in Harsh Conditions: It is resistant to extreme temperatures.
  • Long life: It provides cost-effectiveness by offering a lifespan of up to 15 years.

This advanced technology increases the reliability of trains and aligns with Škoda's sustainable rail transport goals.

Škoda's First ABB Battery-Electric Train

Škoda introduced its first electric train equipped with ABB batteries in the Czech Republic in December 2023. This innovative train will operate on the S8 route between Věřovice and Ostrava. The RegioPanter trains offer efficiency and reliability in passenger transport and offer solutions for partially electrified railway networks.

Škoda plans to deliver a total of 2026 RegioPanter trains by the end of 19. These trains incorporate the European Train Control System (ETCS), improving safety and operational performance.

Towards Sustainable Rail Transport

The Škoda-ABB partnership aims to usher in a new era in rail transport with innovative solutions focused on sustainability. ABB’s Pro batteries not only reduce environmental impact, but also meet the rapidly changing needs of modern rail transport.

Škoda’s partnership with ABB paves the way for more efficient and safer transport solutions for both passengers and the environment. The success of the RegioPanter trains will help set sustainable transport standards that can be adopted more widely in the future.
