Federal Support Strengthens Rail Safety in Brevard

Brevard County is taking a significant step forward in rail safety by receiving a $4,9 million federal grant for safety improvements at seven crossings. The project will cost $6,1 million in total, with 80% of the cost covered by the grant and the remaining $1,2 million funded by Brevard County, Cocoa and Melbourne. Brightline Trains Florida will handle the design and construction, bringing the project to life quickly.

Which Passages Will Be Improved?

The safety efforts will occur at critical points throughout Brevard County, including Michigan Avenue, Dixon Boulevard and West Highlands Drive in Cocoa. Masterson Street, New Haven Avenue and WH Jackson Street in Melbourne and Holly Street in Micco will also benefit from the project.

Tragic Accidents That Inspired Security Studies

The project is a response to two tragic accidents on WH Jackson Street in January 2024, which left three people dead and were caused by drivers neglecting to lower their doors. These tragic events highlighted the need for stricter safety measures, making the project a priority.

Part of a National Security Initiative

The federal grant is part of a $1,1 billion safety program across the U.S. The initiative aims to increase safety at more than 123 railroad crossings by supporting 1.000 different projects. Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg called the initiative a transformative step for communities and highlighted its contribution to transportation safety.

Driver Safety Tips and Brightline Expansion

The Florida Department of Transportation reminds drivers to only cross the tracks at designated points and to remember to lower the gates. Simple precautions like these are critical to preventing future tragedies.

Meanwhile, Brightline received a $33,79 million grant to expand its Orlando-Miami service. The expansion will increase train capacity, improve service frequency, and provide a better experience for passengers.

A Safer Future in Brevard County

Federal grant-backed safety measures and improved passenger services will transform Brevard County’s transportation landscape, improving safety and improving the quality of life across the region.
