This process will increase Poland’s defense capabilities and strengthen cooperation with the United States.
Kosiniak-Kamysz stressed that this delivery will significantly increase Poland's combat readiness. He also noted that these advanced tanks will significantly strengthen the country's defense capabilities.
M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams Features
The M1A2 SEPv3 is the latest version of the Abrams main battle tank and features significant improvements. These tanks feature stronger armour, improved fire control systems and significant improvements in crew survivability. Weighing over 60 tonnes, the M1A2 SEPv3 will be the heaviest tank in the Polish inventory.
Supply and Agreement Details
Poland purchased the tanks in a $4.75 billion deal that includes a total of 250 M1A2 SEPv3 tanks, 26 M88A2 Hercules recovery vehicles, 17 M1110 Joint Strike Bridges, and comprehensive training and logistics packages. This delivery is part of an agreement signed on April 5, 2022.
Transition Process and Current Fleets
The new tanks will join Poland’s existing M1A1 FEP tank fleet, which consists of 2022 M2024A116 tanks procured from US Army stocks between 1 and 1. The older M1A1 tanks were refurbished before being deployed to the Polish Army’s 18th Mechanized Division through a rapid procurement process.
This important delivery is a strategic step towards modernising Poland's defence force and will strengthen security in the region.
