Northern Trains has announced plans to modernise its fleet, revolutionising its rail service by introducing up to 450 sustainable trains. The initiative is a major project that aims to improve rail journeys in the North of England.
Racing with Five Manufacturers: Electric and Dual-Mode Trains
Five leading manufacturers, Alstom, CAF, Hitachi, Siemens Mobility and Stadler, are competing to supply advanced trains for Northern Trains. Northern Trains aims to integrate purely electric and dual-mode units, thereby both increasing environmental sustainability and improving the limited electrification of the rail network.
The new trains will be designed to be able to be converted to electric or battery operation throughout their lifetime – a significant development, particularly considering that only 25% of the Northern network is electric, and will support the UK’s net zero emissions target.
Sustainability and Modernization Goal
Northern Trains General Manager Tricia Williams highlighted the project’s contribution to sustainability, saying the modernisation of the fleet was a “game changer” for passengers, aligned with long-term environmental goals. The project aims to create a more environmentally friendly and efficient rail network.
Modernization Timeline and Impact
The project's framework agreements are expected to be signed in 2026 and train deliveries are expected to begin in 2030. Financing negotiations will take place in 2025 and each phase is aimed to be completed on time.
The first phase will involve the introduction of 12 three-car electric train units, replacing diesel-powered units of Classes 150, 155 and 156. These new trains will strengthen connectivity between key cities and operate on the electrified Transpennine Route.
The next phases will replace older fleets, which will simplify operations and reduce maintenance costs, while also providing improvements in staff training and overall efficiency, with the aim of benefiting millions of passengers.
The Importance of Upgrades and Passenger Experience
Around 60% of Northern Trains’ current fleet is over 30 years old, highlighting the urgency of the need for modernisation. Switching to new, eco-friendly trains will transform the passenger experience and reduce environmental impact.
Northern Trains’ commitment to innovation is delivering a brighter future for regional travel. By replacing ageing vehicles with advanced technology, the company is setting a new standard for sustainable and reliable rail services.
