Nevra Onursal Karaağaç: Our solutions support sustainability efforts

Emphasizing that Hitit, which places sustainability at the center of its business strategies, will continue to focus on priority criteria such as environment, climate change, biodiversity, human rights and management structure, General Manager Nevra Onursal Karaağaç said, “Sustainability is one of the most important issues in the airline and travel sector. Although aviation actually has a small share of three percent in terms of sustainability, the public perception is not in this direction. For this reason, IATA made a decision regarding the NetZero target for 2050 and reducing carbon emissions of airline companies to zero. For this reason, airline companies are carrying out very serious work to reduce carbon emissions. Crane.CA, the cost accounting solution developed by Hitit, will make significant contributions to airline companies in achieving their 2050 targets. We also value business partnerships in our sector’s sustainability efforts; as a member of the Sustainable Aviation Platform established under the leadership of Turkish Airlines, Boeing and Istanbul Technical University, we contribute to the creation of the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) roadmap.”

Karaağaç: We will be a permanent member of the BIST Sustainability Index

Noting that Hitit has taken serious steps towards its own sustainability journey, Karaağaç emphasized that the company evaluates its carbon emission and environmental impact footprint in accordance with national and international standards. Karaağaç summarized the work done for the company as follows:

“In addition to analyzing Scope 1 and Scope 2 data, we work together with our partners to accurately identify Scope 3 data. Aligning our activities with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals determined by the United Nations is the primary motivation for all our business and social processes. We conduct all our activities in a way that benefits areas such as gender equality, responsible consumption and production, quality education, healthy living, reducing inequalities, clean water and sanitation, and thus strive to make sustainability a reality in every aspect of life. Diversity and inclusion have been the most fundamental principles of our corporate culture since our establishment. With 38 percent of our employees, 50 percent of our Board of Directors, and more than 60 percent of our Executive Team being women, we surpass world averages in gender diversity in our workplaces. This stance is also reflected in our employment policies, social responsibility projects, and our active presence in sector-wide initiatives such as IATA’s “2025by25 Project”, which aims to increase women’s representation in the aviation industry to at least 25 percent by 2025. With the “Flying Rackets” project, which we have been continuing since 2018 and is Turkey’s first sustainable table tennis project, we have brought together more than 411 thousand students and 160 teachers in 430 public schools with table tennis without any gender discrimination. In addition, we are making academic collaborations with universities in our studies on quality education and reducing gender inequalities in education. We have studies especially for vocational high school students who have difficulty finding qualified jobs to develop their technical skills and become employable in the field of aviation software. We are taking steps to close the digital gap by donating our technological equipment to schools in need in Anatolia. From now on, we will work to become one of the permanent members of the BIST Sustainability Index with the studies that we will gradually increase the momentum of.”
