Czech Railways has started testing Starlink satellite internet technology on its trains, with the aim of providing faster and more reliable internet access for its passengers. The innovation aims to improve the travel experience on routes from Brno to Olomouc and Prague.
Better Connection with Starlink Technology
Starlink, developed by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, promises to offer fewer delays and disruptions, especially on long-distance routes, using low-orbit satellite technology. Czech Railways was one of the first rail operators in Europe to test Starlink, and is carrying out its first tests on InterPanter trains.
Being Tested as Part of Modernization Plan
The effort is part of Czech Railways’ plan to modernize train connectivity. Starlink technology aims to provide better internet access by integrating special antennas into trains. CEO Michal Krapinec noted that SpaceX is providing its equipment free of charge and that there are only minor costs for train modifications.
Responding to Internet Request
Czech Railways is upgrading routers and signal boosters to improve on-train internet service. It has added around 2024 new Wi-Fi connections by 800, covering 90% of its long-distance fleet. Future plans include integrating 5G networks on high-speed trains such as the Pendolino and Railjet.
The Connectivity Revolution in Europe
With the Starlink technology and upgrades, Czech Railways is leading the way in modernising passenger internet experiences across Europe. This initiative is a major step towards meeting the growing demands for connectivity and making the rail travel experience more comfortable.
