Comprehensive Cooperation Step from the US and Armenia

On January 14, 2025, a historic step was taken in Washington DC, and the establishment charter of the US-Armenia Strategic Partnership Commission was signed. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan emphasized that this cooperation will further strengthen relations between the two countries. Blinken said, “This commission provides an important framework to deepen our cooperation in many areas, including economic issues, security, defense, democracy, justice and inclusiveness.”

Economic and Security Cooperations

The US plans to take steps in various areas within the scope of cooperation with Armenia. In this context, negotiations on the 123 Peaceful Nuclear Cooperation Agreement are planned to begin. It was stated that the agreement will open new avenues of cooperation between the two countries in the fields of nuclear energy, science and technology. In addition, a US Customs and Border Patrol team will visit Armenia in the coming months to conduct joint work to improve border security capacity.

According to Blinken’s statements, this agreement is seen as a turning point in relations between the two countries. In particular, Armenia’s intention to join the global coalition against ISIS/ISIS further increases the importance of the security dimension in the partnership.

US Investments in Armenia

The investments the US has made in Armenia to date are noteworthy. The US Embassy in Armenia announced that a total of $3.3 billion has been invested to date in support of democratic reforms, economic growth and humanitarian aid. $340 million of these investments have been made since 2021.

In this context, the statement emphasized that the basis of the partnership is the democratic values ​​shared by the two countries. In addition to the goal of expanding economic, security and defense cooperation, it was stated that efforts continue to strengthen democracy, justice and inclusiveness and to increase people-to-people exchanges.

New Perspectives Between Armenia and the US

Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan stated that the Strategic Partnership Commission has taken cooperation between the two countries to a new level. Mirzoyan emphasized that this agreement covers not only the economic and security spheres, but also social resilience and democratic reforms.

This strategic partnership is important for regional and global cooperation. The US's view of Armenia as a strategic partner is considered an important step towards ensuring stability in the region. At the same time, Armenia's strengthening of its ties with the US could contribute to the country's economic and political strength.
