Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility solutions, has taken a significant step for GO Transit operating in the Greater Golden Horseshoe region of Ontario, Canada. The contract with Metrolinx, valued at approximately CAD 500 million (EUR 340 million), will see the mid-life overhaul and modernization of 181 Bi-Level commuter rail cars. The project will start in 2026 at Alstom’s Thunder Bay, Ontario facility and will support more than 2030 highly skilled jobs until at least 250.
Passenger Experience with Technological Innovations
To improve the travel experience for GO Transit users, the Bi-Level VIII series railcars will undergo a comprehensive revamp. The revamp will add USB ports, new customer seats, accessible toilets, energy-saving LED lighting and updated interior design elements. This modernization will provide passengers with a more comfortable and reliable journey, while supporting faster and more frequent train services as part of Metrolinx’s GO Expansion Program.
