Türkiye Lowers Flags to Half-Mast for National Mourning After Kartalkaya Fire

The fire that broke out at the Grand Kartal Hotel in Bolu Kartalkaya Ski Resort, in which 76 people lost their lives, deeply shook Turkey. Following the fire disaster, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced that a one-day national mourning period was declared throughout the country. Erdoğan made his statement after the Cabinet Meeting held at the Presidential Complex yesterday.

Flags Lowered to Half Mast

Immediately after the declaration of national mourning, flags were lowered to half-staff in all public buildings and foreign missions in Turkey until sunset. This gesture was accepted as a moment of silence in memory of the lives lost. During the mourning period, citizens came together silently in different villages and neighborhoods of the city and prayed for those who lost their lives.

The Message of Unity and Solidarity of the Society

The fire disaster has once again highlighted the social solidarity in Turkey. This message of sensitivity and unity displayed across the country symbolizes the desire for a national declaration of mourning not only to commemorate the lives lost, but also to share the nation's pain.
